Your Indiana Wine Tour Itinerary

Start your tour early, because many of the wineries close by 6 p.m. And don't forget your map!

THE RIDGE WINERY

298 Ind. 156 (just outside of Vevay and a few miles up the street from Belterra Casino)
(812) 427-3380

In addition to the wine, the Ridge Winery tasting room boasts a dazzling view of the Ohio River. Compliment tasting room owners Greg and Traci Pavey on their newly sealed deck and potted plants. They'll appreciate you noticing their hard work.

LANTHIER WINERY

123 Mill St., Madison
(812) 273-2409

The tasting room table was crowded with people when I was there on a Saturday last month, but there's plenty to see outside in the garden or in the loft art gallery upstairs if you have to wait. And the loft affords a great vantage point for photos of your friends milling about the WINES.

MADISON VINEYARDS ESTATE WINERY

1456 County Road 400 North(just off 421 North), Madison
(812) 273-6500

This is the only Madison where you can enjoy the grape vines as you sip a glass on the large deck. Ask the person pouring the wine about Black Dog and the two dogs featured on the label. Then make a toast to Burt and Hobbs.

CLIFTY FALLS STATE PARK

Just outside of Madison, with entrances on Ind. 56 or 62 West
(812) 273-885 or www.state.in.us

You're going to need a break after visiting all those wineries, so cruise into Clifty Falls for the view. The park has many hiking trails, a large picnic area and plenty of space to lay down on your blanket and take it all in, and even a lodge and campgrounds if you want to stay the night. But the real attraction is the overlook that looks down onto Clifty Falls itself.

DOWNTOWN MADISON ON MAIN STREET

How ya doin'? Need some food? A glass of water with dinner, maybe? Then this is where to get it. I had dinner at McQuiston's, a brewery located at 605 W. Main St., where there's beer tasting and live music at night. If you're in the mood for ice cream, check out Mundt's, 207 W. Main St. The confectionery has been featured on the Food Network and National Geographic, but get there before 5 p.m. because it closes early. There is also an old hamburger joint called Hinkles, 204 W. Main St., that has a broken old neon sign out front and a lunch counter where you can watch the cooks grill your burger and onion - one of the best burgers I've ever had.

THE THOMAS FAMILY WINERY

208 E. Second St., Madison
(812) 273-3755

The winery is located in an 1850s stable and carriage house, and the tasting room is pub-style. It's the one place that you can count on being open past 6 p.m. in Madison. It gets down with front-porch music - bluegrass, Americana - after 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and there's wine tasting until around 6 p.m.
