Picking the right wedding-day makeup will depend on your overall bridal style. Some brides want high drama. Others prefer simple and natural. But the key to getting picture-perfect makeup is a combination of a few easy steps.
Julie Holzberger, director of Aveda Fredric's in Hyde Park, says that bridal makeup should never look overdone or go too far outside of what you'd normally wear. "A bride should have a classic look with modern inspiration," she says. "Keep it similar to what (she's) already doing."
Most importantly, don't rush out and buy loads of makeup that you'll only wear once. Holzberger says adding a few new pieces in seasonal colors can give you exactly what you want. Here is spring-hued makeup from Aveda made for a bridal look. (The products can also be used well beyond the wedding day.)
HOW TO: Use a light brown eyeliner to line lids and gently "shade" to crease and blend. This will give your shadow a base so it will hold all day. It sounds dramatic, but blending will make the color very soft. Set with translucent loose powder. Shown here: Eye Definer in Sepia, $12.
HOW TO: Any single eye shade can look subtle or dramatic depending on how you apply it. Don't normally wear makeup? Try colors from Aveda's spring "Air Spun" or "Color Washed" collection such as Khaki Cloud or Plum Felt to define your crease. Colors from the "Sun Spiced" palette, such as Sierra Chambray, offer a warmer seasonal look. But all can be played up for more drama. Shown here: single eye colors, $11 each.
HOW TO: For a lasting look, apply a cream blush and set with translucent powder. Shown here: Petal Essence cheek tint in Phlox, $22.
HOW TO: For the ceremony, use a lip liner/lipstick combo. Line lips and fill in completely with lip pencil. Then, apply lipstick. Save the gloss for the reception. Simply dot bottom lip and "smudge" lips together to blend. Shown here: lip color in Lychee Splash ($14).
TIP 1: Set creamy products (cheeks, eyes and lips) with a dusting of translucent powder for staying power. Try Inner Light loose powder, $19.
TIP 2: Make an appointment at the Aveda Fredric's Institute for a bridal makeup consultation ($15). It also includes application on the day of the wedding.
